A Winnipeg woman has found out the hard way that income tax must be paid—even on money that’s been stolen.

The Canada Revenue Agency has announced that Audrey Shuster has been fined more than $16,000—the amount of tax owing on money she embezzled from her employer.

Shuster was convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison in 2003 for misappropriating $73,000 from a farm equipment supplier where she was employed as a bookkeeper.

Shuster forged the company president’s signature on cheques that she wrote to herself.
